The Biennial Geophysical Seminar, March 2012
The Norwegian Petroleum Society is organising its traditional three day geophysical seminar in Kristiansand. The biennial seminar has, since its start in 1977, become popular and recognized throughout the petroleum industry.
The themes of these seminars highlight new developments in
geophysical techniques, changes and recent achievements relevant to
the petroleum industry.
The world is becoming increasingly dependent on oil produced from
fields that are past their peak production and the oil industry has
not succeeded in finding new reserves to balance the increased
demand. One exception is the recent giant discovery of the
Avaldsnes/Aldous field in the North Sea is an inspiration for all
of us, and serves as an excellent reminder that one should never
stop searching for new opportunities. This year, we have invited
one of the pioneers involved in this major discovery, Hans Christen
Rønnevik, to tell us about the background for the success and point
out the new ideas that led to this major discovery in a mature
area.
The learning from the
Avaldsnes/Aldous discovery is that in the future we will need to
explore for both new play models, bot in mature and frontier areas.
For the production fields we need to increase the recovery ratres
and increase efficiency by new work processes. The main objective
of the Geophysical Seminar 2012 is to highlight how development and
applications of new geophysical acquisition, processing and
interpretation techniques can help to meet these challenges,
specifically for the Norwegian continental shelf. Improvements
related to analysis and integration of different geophysical data
and geological knowledge, are required in exploration, field
development and production.
The Geophysical Seminar 2012 will
focus on the following topics:
- Joint use of seismic and electromagnetic data for hydrocarbon
exploration
- Ocean bottom seismic
- Acquisition techniques focused on enhanced seismic band
width
- Multiple attenuation
- Full waveform inversion
- Seismic imaging methodology
- Characterization of source rock from seismic
- Use of 4D seismic in reservoir management
- Geophysical data in integrated work flows
- Using fibre optic sensors for permanent seismic monitoring
The three day conference program
offers a variety of case studies and presentations of new
technology addressing these topics. To stimulate
quality presentations a "Best Paper
Award" will be presented at the end of the
seminar.
Hans Christen Rønnevik (Lundin Petroleum) will
open the conference by introducing a new mindset for exploration,
with a special focus on the recent discovery of the major
Avaldsnes/Aldous-discovery in the North Sea. This will be followed
by a series of exploration cases, including methods and use of
various types of data.
Helmut Jakubowicz (Imperial
College) will discuss new acquisition technologies. His key note
talk will be followed by several presentations related to enhanced
bandwidth of seismic data as a result of innovative and new
acquisition techniques.
On the second day, Lasse Amundsen
(Statoil) will discuss limitations and possibilities related to
full waveform inversion, followed by several presentations showing
examples and recent developments related to the use of this
technique.
Henning Hoeber (CGGVeritas) will give an
overview of recent developments within 4D seismic, from acquisition
via processing to the end product which is increased hydrocarbon
production. The preceding talks include improved processing methods
to enhance the 4D signal and several case studies.
The last session will be kicked off by Eli
Zachariassen (Statoil) who will present an integrated
work flow for model update using various types of reservoir
monitoring data. This session will conclude with several papers
focusing on how to use various data types in cross disciplinary
reservoir studies.
At the seminar "The Norwegian Geophysical Award"
will be presented by WesternGeco (please see below).
The social events are also important parts of the program, and this
year we invite you to both wine tasting and a conference dinner. On
behalf of the Organising Committee I welcome you to exciting days
in Kristiansand!
