NSIG unveils 2013 vision for energy sector

The establishment of the North of Scotland and the Islands as the hub of the UK’s renewable energy industry, a further rise in membership and stronger links between the Highlands and the North East are among the goals of leading energy and engineering umbrella organisation North Scotland Industries Group (NSIG) over the next four years.

NSIG chief executive, Ian Couper, outlined his vision to 2013 at the organisation’s annual general meeting, held recently at Ross County Football Club, Dingwall.

The meeting heard there were significant opportunities to be won in the multi billion pound renewable energy sector by companies in the region, and it was vital that the local economy did not miss out.

“By 2013 I want the North of Scotland and the Islands to be recognised as the renewable energy centre for Scotland and the UK. This is where the majority of activity will be happening for the UK and we need to blow our trumpet a bit more, to make more people aware of our strengths in this sector.

“The next few years are going to be vital for the energy industry in the North of Scotland. Hopefully by the summer of next year we will see the oil and gas industry back to higher production and development levels after the recession and we need to make sure we are doing all we can in that sector. But also there will be so much happening in terms of renewable energy in the North of Scotland and the Islands, and we need to make sure we maximise these opportunities.

“We also need to see a stronger link between the operators and drilling companies based in Aberdeen and the service companies based in Invergordon. They need to recognise the excellent facilities and the highly skilled workforce we have in the Cromarty Firth area – ready and willing to work for them.”

Membership of NSIG, which covers the Highlands and Islands, Moray and Aberdeen, has risen from 80 to 111 in the past 12 months and has more than doubled in the past two years, and Mr Couper said he would like that figure to rise to 150 by 2013.

Next year the organisation will look to incorporate Argyll into its activity.

NSIG will also look to strengthen its global connections in the future. Links with the Dutch energy sector have already been established, trade missions to Denmark and Brazil planned for next year, and connections with the Middle and Far East may be considered. As part of its international support for members, NSIG will be attending exhibitions and events in the USA and Norway next year.

Mr Couper who is a member of two cross party committees at Holyrood for renewable energy and oil and gas added the organisation would look to further improve its lobbying capabilities through one to one meetings with ministers in the UK and Scottish governments.

NSIG chairman Mike Kydd told the AGM: “The past 12 months have been a difficult time for all businesses in the area but, despite that, 2009 has been our most successful year in terms of membership numbers and geographic spread. Membership services have increased to match demand and we have a very active board, executive and staff.

NSIG has a strong voice in political circles and is now being listened to with some interest. Strength in numbers can only improve our cause and help to bring the case for our member businesses to the fore.

“It should not be forgotten that the business expertise in the north combined with the facilities and quality of life are not to be underestimated, and although we are not the best at blowing our own trumpet we do have a great deal to offer.”
