To drill new well in the pre-salt

The board of the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) authorized Petrobras, Tuesday (12/01), to drill a well in the northern portion of the Santos Basin, in an area contiguous to the Iara discovery, outside of the boundaries of the blocks that have already been bid for.

The region is eligible to compose the areas that may come to be the object of Onerous Transfer once Draft Bill No. 5941/09 has been approved.

The purpose of the operation is to gather information about the region, which has yet to be better assessed from the geological viewpoint. Drilling is expected to reach a depth of 6,425 meters.  The data and studies to be collected will be sent to the ANP.

Petrobras intends to send the SS-53 drilling rig to the region, which is expected to kick-off operations by mid-December.

The Company will be in charge of the operation and will bear the well-drilling costs.

The goal is to obtain stratigraphic information (sedimentary strata classification and chronological ordering, determination of the sedimentation environments, and geographical distribution) to grow the geological knowledge regarding the pre-salt section of the northern portion of the Santos Basin and to contribute to the area’s future development.
